Karma Yoga

"Karma Yoga is a term that consists of two words: karma means action, and yoga means union. The term karma (action) in Karma Yoga does not refer to all kinds of actions, but only to those actions which are conducive to liberation. Yoga is that union in which the individual self transcends its individuality and attains universality, or God. Karma Yoga is the method through which the individual self, the ego self, is transcended by performing actions in the world." Baba Hari Dass practices many aspects of Yoga, but of these his greatest emphasis is on the self-discipline of regular spiritual practice and the path of Karma Yoga or Selfless Service.

Karma Yoga’s basic principles are:

  1. Performing action with no self-interest.

  2. Performing action with no expectation of the fruit of the action.

We are guided by this ideal, not because it is a rule, but because the individual's ultimate aim is to reduce attachment to worldly objects and goals and to remove the ego, the “I-Me-Mine” as the motivating force of all of our thoughts and actions.

We practice Karma Yoga during our retreats and through our and work parties by sharing in various Centre work projects.

"Karma Yoga means selfless service. It is chosen and not forced. If you have chosen it, then you give second place to your self-interests." — Baba Hari Dass
