Operations Coordinator

The Operations Coordinator provides support in response to needs arising from events and programs taking place at the centre.  This role works collaboratively with the Programs, Human Resource, Kitchen, Housekeeping, Maintenance and other staff members to ensure smooth running of our programs.  The Operations Coordinator is involved at the planning stage of events and works closely with the Programs Coordinator to ensure logistics and arrangements for events are properly set up before and taken down after programs and events. This position also works closely with the Human Resource Coordinator to ensure our 10-week Residential Karma Yoga Program runs smoothly.  This role also manages a roster of off-land and ad-hoc volunteers who help out during our busy season, and also handles special projects as required.

The position requires a commitment of 28 hours per week of work, including a few hours of weekly communal cleanup shifts. During the first 10 weeks of your time here, we also ask for 7 hours per week of participation in community activities and meetings, as well as classes on yoga theory and practice. This helps new staff to connect to the aims of the Centre and the community in a deeper way. Responsibilities & Qualifications

  • Coordinate and liaise with coordinators and staff to ensure our programs and events are managed logistically to meet with Centre standards.  This includes:
    • Engage with outside suppliers as required
    • Ensure rental and program spaces are adequately and timely set up as per requirements
    • Identify problems in operation process and resolve them quickly and in a timely manner
    • Work collaboratively with coordinators and volunteers in scheduling working hours for all areas
    • Sourcing, managing and scheduling off-land and ad-hoc volunteers during the busy season
  • Facilitate staff and coordinator meetings.
  • Coordinate and manage weekly work parties on the land to help areas that need assistance.
  • Responsible for the overall scheduling of staff for the centre, working in tandem with all area coordinators to ensure all areas are staffed and working smoothly
  • Work closely with Programs Coordinator & Human Resource Coordinator in managing the Resident Karma Yoga Program.  This includes:
    • Assistance in orientation, oversight and stewardship of weekly community circles
  • Maintain and oversee general areas like the dish room, the firewood shed, composting, community kitchen, etc.
  • Evaluate current systems and provide strategic plan for improvements.
Qualifications At least 3-5 years prior experience in an operational or customer service role
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal and problem solving skills with the ability to plan and execute events
  • Clear communication skills and ability to work collaboratively and in a team/community environment
  • Be detail oriented with the ability to juggle multiple competing priorities

Yoga and Community

As an added bonus, when you arrive, you’ll take part in the offerings provided in our Residential Karma Yoga Program for the first 10 weeks of your time here. You’ll learn and practice alongside other folks who come to work in our kitchen, maintenance, farm, office, and housekeeping teams. This allows new residents to gain a thorough introduction to the teachings and practices of yoga that inspire SSCY. Participants in the program normally pay $1,155 for the 10-week period, but we include it as part of the coordinator’s compensation. The ten-week program includes:
  • Two 75-minute classes per week on yoga philosophy, practice, and community life.
  • Two 60-minute classes per week on traditional yogic breathing and meditation.
  • One 90-minute community circle per week for group discussions on matters relevant to community life.
  • Access to ongoing yoga classes and other special events at SSCY.
